Ubuntu is just like any other Linux distro that is based on Debian. The only difference is that the community is one of the best at the moment. In Linux politics, although this does not reflect the majority of people, Debianites argue that Ubuntu is a fork over Debian, and that Ubuntu had bad taste in choosing colors that remind us of poo, but Ubuntu is just bleeding edge Debian so to speak. The Warty release does not give Ubuntu justice - the upcoming Hoary release is actually worth switching. Hindi pa final release ang Hoary naka Gnome 2.10 na (I actually upgraded to Hoary last night) - this is beta software mind you.
Also, Ubuntu is backed up by Canonical Ltd. - I think Mark Shuttleworth owns Canonical. Mark Shuttleworth used to own Thawte before Verisign bought it making him an instant rich guy - so rich that he actually got to join a Soyuz space mission a few years ago. Mark Shuttleworth is the headhog of Ubuntu. In Ubuntu, its all about community. I think the rankings in distrowatch is about page views, not actual usage. The big distros still has the lion's share - Fedora, MDK, Debian, SuSE. Ubuntu is still growing as a distro. Jerome G.
