also note in the top list above around 170MB is eaten by disk buffers.
this is memory that's used as disk cache, and is not being eaten by
applications.

overall, you WANT the system to eat all your memory!!! what's the
point of having the memory if you don't use it? linux will always eat
all the memory that\s unused by processes, to use as disk cache. the
cache/buffers will go down as the number of applications you are
running goes up.
