Mine's currently:

Mem: 256376k total, 235252k used, 21124k free, 12792k buffers
Swap: 289128k total, 0k used, 289128k free, 115428k cached

The above is because I use Ion[Â] for my window manager. Not that I'm
not a GUI guy (I actually use the GIMP a lot, and I've been tweaking it
by doing some Gimp-Scheme magic), but I've learnt a lot from common
desktop environments like KDE and GNOME: the longer you go using them,
you get to appreciate machine efficiency. As indicated, I have 256MB of
memory, but I could easily sit in as little as 64 without swap ;p and
that even surprises me. =D

I keep swap roughly the same, for two reasons: my IDE and CPU bandwith
(I think) is fast enough to handle large transfers (like those done in
graphics operations, or anything that has to do with recursion); and my
hard disk space has only enough left for a swap.

For most modern DEs, 512 can be considered the minimum, though I think
another won't hurt (having the cash to burn it with ;) There should be
tunables for KDE though, so that you could make do even on half of your
current setup...

Also, Linux slurps memory, not because its hungry for it, but because it
knows that sooner or later you're gonna access resources (like files)
and it knows that it can reserve space for caching them. So even if
you've got 1GB of mem it'll try to grab all of it in one gulp.

You've a faster processor than mine, and that's good.
