I want to know what PLUG members are using for their desktops and how they manage the memory used by these GUIs. Do you recommend that I buy another 512mb of RAM?
I'm using XFce 4. It uses much less RAM and is still pretty fast. We have old Pentium IIs running at 266MHz and 350MHz. They all only have 128MB of RAM, so running GNOME or KDE is out of the question (I tried and they c-r-a-w-l).
With XFce and RH9, the desktops are still kinda slow, but they are acceptable for the users and they get their work done (mostly word processing and internet access).
At home, I'm running XFce 4.05 on CentOS and it flies.
God bless!
