Try making everything that can be made compiled as a module (except your IDE controller driver) compiled as a module. Either that, or build-in everything that you need for that specific machine and not bother building the other modules you're positive you don't really need.
I used to do this a lot with my slack box back in the days when that box was still... alive. ;)
