It's an end-user targeted Debian distro (and heavily-patched as well), which
you can achieve the same with a highly customised Debian Sid. If you want the
"latest and greatest" of the FLOSS desktop world, then get Ubuntu (GNOME 2.10
and Xorg is not even in Sid yet).

I don't use Ubuntu but I've been reading a lot about it.

It will run as long as you tell it not to install GNOME and the whole Project
Utopia stack (dbus, hald, etc...). I used to run GNOME (w/o nautilus),
firefox, emacs (gtk+), on a PIII 700MHz and 128MB RAM, and it really hits the
swap most of the time.
