I'm on to setting up my wireless interface. As I understand it, I should

Dick,
Here, /sbin/iwconfig exists.
Do you have /etc/rc.d/rc.wireless (and rc.wireless.conf) installed?
If so,
rc.wireless needs to have execute permissions 755.
You should also have /etc/rc.d/rc.networkmanager (and/or the optional
rc.wicd in the extra/ directory of the distribution). That also needs
to be
executable.
I think the problem is deeper. When I tried a shutdown (from KDE) the
process hung. I powered down by holding the power button. When I tried
powering back up it got as far as:
[ 4.404147] ---[ end Kernel panic - not syncing: No working unit
found. Try passing init= option to kernel. See Linux
Documentation/admin-guide/init.rst for guidance.
