I don't know if this is your problem, but Firefox can be a memory hog.

Bookmarks tend to be forgotten, so when I find something interesting I wanted to read later I'll leave a tab or window open on the site. Typically I can have 6-10 tabs like that. I found that Firefox's memory usage would grow even just sitting there unattended until it was using several GB of RAM.

On a 4GB system it got to the point that I had to restart Firefox almost daily or I would find myself running out of swap space.

My "solution" was to build a new system with 16GB of RAM. :-/
