Neil, While you tried to boot a distro from a USB flash drive for installation, have you tried a live distro, such as Knoppix, on a USB flash drive? I wonder if that might boot because it bypasses everything on the hard drive. Not being familiar with that hardware or anything requiring Microsoft's approval (since M$ would not alloe me to upgrade from windows 3.1 using IBM PC-DOS 6 as the underlying OS) I've no idea whether a live OS would work.
