I don't know how far into setting this up, but you might want to consider a ZFS mirror instead of the mdadm raid1. It could be a little easier to manage. I don't know if Slackware supports it directly but here is a description of using it on Arch https://briankoopman.com/moving/ Others in the group might have an opinion about whether or not one is easier than the other.
