This takes a bunch of steps to get it to work.

From: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1246986
In Firefox:

(1) In a new tab, type or paste*about:config*in the address bar and press Enter/Return. Click the button promising to be careful or accepting the risk.

(2) In the search box above the list, type or paste*SHELL*and pause while the list is filtered

(3) Double-click the*browser.shell.checkDefaultBrowser*preference to switch the value from true to false

--------------------
Someone mentioned having to change something in Thunderbird, too.

From: https://www.lifewire.com/change-the-default-browser-in-thunderbird-2532751

Go to*Edit*>*Preferences*>*Advanced*>*Config Editor*. Enter*network.protocol-handler.warn-external.http*in the search field.

 * Set values

to*True*for*network.protocol-handler.warn-external.http*and*network.protocol-handler.warn-external.https*.
 * Go to*Preferences*>*Attachments*. In the*Content Type*column, go
   to*http*and*https*and select the preferred web browser.

And, of course, the instructions are for a different version of Thunderbird. However, the concepts are valid, and the things needing changing can be found in the Config Editor..., the button for which is at the bottom of the Edit > Preferences page. This version of Thunderbird doesn't have the Advanced step. Once in the Config Editor the settings to change are as shown above. Somewhere I found where Firefox was set, and deleted that setting. Then I tried going to a link from an email and was presented with a box to choose the browser I want to use. Brave was there and I selected it.

A bunch of digging, most of which was figuring out what to search for, but I think I've finally fixed this problem.
