Have you tried killing X, then restarting it?
Every now and then the cut-and-paste functions fail between applications
when X is running. I learned that killing X and restarting it fixed the
problem. It doesn't occur frequently so I haven't bothered trying to
learn
why cut-and-paste fails, I just restart Xfce.

I tried xfdesktop --reload
It involved a logout, which is what I was trying to avoid. No damage,
but also did not solve the problem.
