I have an issue with my HP printer. Xsane will start, but fails when I try to Acquire preview. I get the error message

Failed to start scanner: Invalid argument.

It's not at all clear to me what argument is invalid. Is there some way to find this out?

One of the things I missed during my install of Xubuntu 22.04 was to install the HPLIP software. I did that this morning, though it was not as simple as most things I install. I finally found a page with steps that worked:

https://www.linuxcapable.com/how-to-install-hplip-on-ubuntu-linux/

I can run HPLIP Toolbox and scan with that.

When I run XSane, I am presented with three scanner options:

(*) HP    LaserJet Pro M14 Platen,adf scanner [escl:httpe://192.168.109:443]
( ) Hewlett-Pac HP_LaserJet_Pro_all-in-one [hpaio:/net/HP_LaserJet_Pro_M148-149?ip=192.168.0.109] ( ) eSCL    HP LaserJet Pro ip=192.168.0.109 [airscan0:HP LaserJet Pro M148dw(F44804)]

Going with the default starts up XSane, but returns the Invalid argument error message when I try to scan something. Selecting the second choice works. I haven't tried the third choice. I have no idea what eSCL is.

Scanning works, but after the scan There is an error message that says:

Failed to start scanner: Error during device I/O

But the scan was successful, and I was able to save the scan to a PDF, so I'm mostly happy.

Any ideas why I got that error message?

Thanks.

Oddly, I just started up XSane again to verify some of what I typed above. Now the first entry is no longer there, and what was the second entry is the default. Weird, but I can live with that.
