around and call him an idiot for not kicking the tires.

Why are you so confident that all companies are out to screw their
customers just because someone once told you it's the way things work?
The truth is that many companies realize the importance of customer
satisfaction and go out of their way to keep them happy. Perhaps it
makes sense to sell a lemon since people rarely buy cars, but with a
subscription service like an Internet connection, the true value is in a
continuing relationship. In fact, I'd go so far as to say that you're
the one being stupid with your knee-jerk "caveat emptor" insults.
