I just hit an interesting problem. I have two Lenovo laptops, an R51
and a T61, both running new installations of Ubuntu 10.10. Both
installations defaulted to compiz. In both cases, I can play movies,
MP3s, etc. just fine.

The problem comes in that I can't get sound from the terminal or emacs.
I found out that if I disable compiz, I get sounds from the terminal. I
can select different sounds from the sound preferences app. They work
with compiz disabled. On the T61, I get no sound from the terminal with
compiz re-enabled. On the R51, I get a dull little beep from the
terminal with compiz enabled, but not the bark or sonar, etc. I may
have selected.

I have the compiz config settings manager installed. On both machines,
I have Audible Bell checked (General Options-> General).

I still don't have any sound from emacs, with or without sound enabled.

Anyone got any good ideas?
