I found (by accident) a partial solution to the compiz beep problem. If
compiz is not enabled, you select the beep you want, enable compiz,
then log out and back in again. Once you've done that, it works, and
you can select other sounds without the rigmarole. Gnrrr.
Partial progress on the emacs front: launch emacs in a terminal
("emacs -nw") and it beeps just fine.
