If you don't need color, the Brother HL2270DW is $100 on Amazon and is a
great B/W workhorse. We had the previous generation (in beige ;-P) which
was still going strong after many years of regular use. The only reason we
went to the new one was to get wireless printing, which has been great. I
used to be an HP laserjet fan, but have had great experience with Brother.

For color, we use an Epson Artisan 835. The current model, the 837, is $280
on Amazon. It's been a great color printer (though the ink, as usual for
inkjets, is ridiculously expensive). If you're printing mostly B/W, go with
a laserjet.
