I'll check there. But I do not see anything in the ssh config that
would deny users. Yes openssh is running. After all, ssh dan@localhost
works just fine. It's only when I'm coming from OUTSIDE the localhost
that I get denied.

I think you're having an openssh config issue. Is it configured to listen
on the public ip? Is it configured to allow access with password?

Or, you may not have openssh installed/running by default. I access mine
via ssh. I've only used the console a couple of times.

The only way I can seem to connect to my virtual machine is via the AJAX
console program, but that program allows way too many lines before it
scrolls, so for example if I'm in nano, I can't see the toolbar. Plus,
if I hit ^W to initiate a search in nano, the console window closes.
I tried logging in via SSH, but my login attempts are always denied.
I've tripple checked the password, and I know it's good. So I'm at a
