It's really a matter of where mplayer expects the codec to be, you've not reached the AlienBBC stage yet.
You could just search for the codecs, I have a feeling that there is a folder called codecs, somewhere in the /usr hierarchy. You could open that folder using Go to Folder. Or Command-F (which is a variant of the Spotlight search) and setting (via Other in the menu you get from the Kind entry) Visibility to visible and invisible and search for "codec".
