AlienBBC is now working fine for me, but some people are having trouble
even getting mplayer to work. There are known issues with some versions
of the codec not working with mplayer, and the main mplayer page has had
problems lately.

So I think it's time for some experimentation on what works, what's
available where, and so on. Probably a change in the instructions is
needed. It would be great if the right versions of mplayer and the
codec could be hosted on the AlienBBC page, but I do realise there are
issues in this.

I'm not myself up to changing a working system just to experiment and
see what works and what doesn't but maybe others can do so, or at least
report on their working configurations. Unfortunately I can't remember
where I got the versions.

The version of cook.bundle that works for me has size 112,758 bytes. I
think the one with size 100,462 bytes does not work.

My mplayer has size around 6.1 Mb. If, as the instructions suggest, you
download Mplayer for OS X (which has a GUI) from the sourceforge site,
then the Tiger version (I haven't checked the Panther version) has an
actual mplayer file of only around 500 kb size, so there must be some
major differences and this version is unlikely to work.

I am not sure what places cook.bundle can safely be put in, but I had
it in /Library/Application Support/ffmpegX/reallib (a folder that I
needed to create). The permissions included Read permissions for
everybody, just in case this has caused problems for others.

For completeness, I will mention the point I discovered earlier. Once
mplayer is working ok, to get AlienBBC to work you *may* need to alter
mplayer.sh so that the line

app=mplayer

contains the full path to mplayer. This holds even if mplayr is in
/usr/local/bin (though some people don't need to do this) in which case
the line needs to be

app=/usr/local/bin/mplayer

And if you make this change using an OS X text editor (rather than a
Unix text editor using Terminal) be sure that the text editor allows
Unix line endings - I've been caught with that one on occasions.
