I wish I knew what was going on. Several times I have made a post, seen it come up, but when I next go to the thread my post isn't there though later ones are. I think that has happened with a follow-up post I made to my original post in this thread. Unless I posted it in another thread.
You could try going to the page listed in the instructions and downloading the essential package (which can certainly be downloaded) rather than the one for OS X, which seems to have disappeared. I'm not guaranteeing that this will work (and anyway, you may have to move the codec that gets installed and put it in a different place). Please try this first, and also try different versions of mplayer. Go to a ftp mirror such as Hungary 2 (others will work, but I think Hungary itself won't) and download Releases (I'm using Tiger, in which going to the mirror actually produces a desktop window of items). Try downloading them all and experiment (see item 2 of the instructions) to see which works. If you are up to it, please try these procedures. Due to changes in what's available, parts of the old instructions don't work, and the more data we have on what versions work and what don't the better. I could always email you the version that works for me. But, as I said, if you feel like experimenting then the results you get will help others. By the way, I said that mplayer in the Tiger version of the GUI Mplayer was so much smaller than the version I have that I thought it would not work.
