I think I have found the remaining garbled audio problem. I had to resort to desk debug because I have not experienced the problem myself even though I have run Mplayer on R4 for many hours.
The problem was a coding error where not enough packets were inserted when timegaps were multiples of block size such as 3712, 5568, 7424 etc. I've done a few small tweaks as well.
