It was a fresh install. I thought I'd read what to do, perhaps I
didn't... The patches mentioned in my post when i said "fully patched"
meant SuSE - sorry, that's my fault. 

The patches in the other post when I went to the page said they were
for Windows. 

Also, when I go to http://www.x2systems.com/alienbbc/mplayer.html and
click on the links for these patches (which I thought were for Windows)
it seems that the threads they link to don't have any patches on them.
I'm starting to think I must be terminally stupid trying to install
this one. :(
