I have upgraded to 7.9 and the installation process (and thus installation of faad no doubt) seems to have resolved the issue. Sadly the buffering is back but iPlayer is fixed!!!!!!
Perhaps I will place a question (in the right folder!) for the ongoing buffering issue. Thanks once again bpa for all your help.
