It can vary according to the station and sometimes how long you pause. 
Some stations using simple http/mp3 or http/aac will disconnect if
paused for more than than x minutes otherwise will continue a paused
stream.  For HLS and DASH which have chunked http (i.e. a playlist of
many time stamped URLs each a small chunks of audio)  - the paused URL
can become invalid after a time periond - this is the issue
slartbiartfast is commenting on (although I thought I had "fixed" the
issues of long pauses with BBCiplayer plugin but maybe not ).

The point is that with streamed radio - there are different
outcomes/behaviours depending on the station and both pause / stop
should be provided to give user complete control.  With SB3 etc. - long
pause was a stop.
