I have reinstalled a clean version of LMS and then it works, but as soon
as I add the Spotty Plugin v2.8, it fails as above.

I have seen issues where LMS would hang for quite a bit while trying to authenticate in the past, too. I tried to mitigate it. But eventually I think the behaviour was also improved by some more tweaks to HTTPS handling. Please make sure you run the latest and greatest LMS code (I think the changes were around end of 2018 or very early 2019).
