Good that you found the problem. Although your description of your setup was good - you missed a vital piece of info - that the player were synced.
Synced players have a different set of problems but sync problems nearly always show up as stuttering. Audio output when syncing relies on feedback from the audio drivers so a high spec system is not that relevant compared to the audio subsystem being used and if there is "special" processing.
