Season in 2009 was the same as Series. Recent changes in BBC Web pages (which I only noticed when doing plugin update) brought in a category of Season - it is like a Series but subtly different - a few program have been defined to be a Season rather than a Series - not really sure what is the criteria so perhaps Season is once a year but Series can be multiple in one year. An interesting backgrounder to the 2009 document is this doc by I think one of the tech guys in BBC http://smethur.st/posts/176135860 It sounds like you want a bookmark system.
