I'll take a backup first, but would you expect to be able to install 7.9.3 "over the top" of 7.8 and keep all the settings and config and it still work? (I know best practise is always a fresh install...)
Yes and no: yes to installing on top, no to "best practice" (at least for LMS). I never do fresh installs, and I switch between 7.7, 7.9 and 8.0 all the time.
