Not sure if it helps, but basic controls (skip/volume/pause) works great on an old-school Pebble watch with Squeeze Ctrl running on Android. The Pebble defaults to controlling the latest media player, so as long as Squeeze Ctrl is set to run in the background it just natively works.
I'm only mentioning this in case it gives some inspiration for easy options on other devices.
