The MAC address is usually hard coded in the network device, Ethernet, Wifi or Bluetooth. The first 6 digit will be registered to the Raspberry Pi Foundation. If you are using a USB Wifi adapter the MAC address will be registered to the device manufacture.
This nearly unique MAC address can be overwritten in software.
