The quality of the raw Internet streams on the Squeezebox via AlienBBC
will be lower than DAB, as per the previous posts. However there are
several solutions for feeding the broadcast DAB, DVB-T (Freeview) or
DVB-S (Satellite) streams into a Squeezebox. This has many advantages
(doesn't depend on a working Internet connection, doesn't run into any
ISP volume cap limits, better quality) for playing "live" radio without
removing the ability to use AlienBBC for the Listen Again service.

1) DAB - Windows only, doesn't work with XP SP2. Find an old Psion
Wavefinder (c. £60 on eBay) and download the (free) DABBar software -
you now have a Shoutcast / Icecast compatible stream server which will
work with the Squeezebox and deliver any receivable DAB station. Very
straightforward to set up and now works again with Vista after XP/SP2
USB driver changes broke it.

2) DVB-S or DVB-T - Linux only (may be a Windows solution but I haven't
found one?). Buy a Hauppauge Nova-T (DVB-T) or Nova-S (DVB-S) card. Load
/ build the DVBStream and DVBUtils packages, Icecast2 and DVBShout and
you have a very reliable and high quality stream source. Both are
192kbps for all BBC stations but DVB-S is Joint Stereo rather than
Discrete Stereo on DVB-T, making DVB-S an (arguably) higher quality
source.

Both of these support channel selection and Alarm Clock functions from
the Squeezebox (use Playlists or Favourites...)

There are also some solutions for Digitising and streaming the FM
service, but channel selection is more problematic and for my money the
DAB / DVB options are far better.

Phil
