A Pi isn’t suited to this scenario for the reasons you have highlighted.
However one presumes you have a smartphone - what is wrong with using
that as a player (via OpenVPN)?

As it happens I’m about to go away for a few days. I’ll be taking my
phone and a tablet both have iPeng installed and a pair of decent
headphones. I will vpn into my home network and use iPeng in player mode
but control with Material. If I wanted speakers rather than headphones
I’d also take a usb camera converter cable and an Audioquest dragonfly.
I’m iOS but SB Player on an Android would work just as well.
I could take a Pi but I’d have to then take a laptop to edit the WiFi
file. Just a bit too much hassle.
