A Pi isnt suited to this scenario for the reasons you have highlighted. However one presumes you have a smartphone - what is wrong with using that as a player (via OpenVPN)?
As it happens Im about to go away for a few days. Ill be taking my phone and a tablet both have iPeng installed and a pair of decent headphones. I will vpn into my home network and use iPeng in player mode but control with Material. If I wanted speakers rather than headphones Id also take a usb camera converter cable and an Audioquest dragonfly. Im iOS but SB Player on an Android would work just as well. I could take a Pi but Id have to then take a laptop to edit the WiFi file. Just a bit too much hassle.
