I think all the hints I'd give already have been given. But let's start over: please post your MAI settings. As mentioned before the performance depends on how you've configured MAI. If you haven't enabled display of artist pictures, then the browsing should see no impact at all.
And are you actually talking about the artists list? You only say "browsing" was slow.
