Ok - so answering my own question. Figured out that the Alien stuff was supposed to be in /usr/share/slimserver. So now I see AlienBBC from my slimserver interface.
however if I try to play BBC content I get "ERROR: NO ITEMS FOUND IN PLAYLIST" on the Squeezebox. also when trying to play WMAs (unprotected) I get "PROBLEM: CAN'T OPEN FILE FOR:" and then the name of the track.
