I moved the icon back to the desktop, and now it stays in position when launched. I don't know why this would fix the issue.
However, a side effect is that now when SoftSqueeze is launched and comes up in power-off mode, there is no text. I assumed the brightness setting had been lost, but when I press the "bright" button on the remote I still don't see anything on the display. I checked in the player settings via WebUI, and the power-off mode does have a brightness value of 3. If I power on the softsqueeze player, the screen text is okay. Any idea what is going on there?
