No no need to install 9.0c. My Vista installation is as it came from the DVD with Dx10 and nothing else. After installing the sdk and running the demo it just worked. I don't believe the sdk installs any other version of Dx. This is also consistent with my other 2 PCs that already had 9.0c installed and still experienced the exception. Both worked after installing the sdk and running the demo.
