Thanks for the input. Actually, the RC2 did compile all the subfolders, it failed on the last steps. I tried inserting the unmodified ao_pcm.c & mp_msg.c and then mplayer built ok. I then by hand modified these files by comparing the modfied ones with the original, removed the previosly compiled mplayer, recompiled and it went ok.
make install installed mplayer & copying the alienbbc plugin (after modifying the custom-convert.conf) into /var/lib/squeezecenter/plugins with a restart of squeezecenter revealed the alicenbbc plugin. And mplayer worked at first attempt. CPU load about 30% on the buffalo linkstation live.
