Ok, got it, your are reluctant to give this information away and your
dancing between being "hacker friendly" and "provider friendly".

Being in the first category, I'm happy to say that the little trick did
work. Still, I also had to remove the byte swapping from lame because
the music was like the sound of the wind with it.

lame help extract:
-x force byte-swapping of input

So basically, if you want to listen to alienBBC on the PSP, you also
need to open the file
???/SqueezeCenter/server/Plugins/Alien/custom-convert.conf

and then change this:

rtsp mp3 * *
[mplayer] -really-quiet -vc null -vo null -bandwidth 10000000 -cache
128 -af volume=0,resample=44100:0:1,channels=2 -ao
pcm:nowaveheader:file=#PIPE# $FILE$ | [lame] --silent -r -x -q
$QUALITY$ -b $BITRATE$ - -

by this

rtsp mp3 * *
[mplayer] -really-quiet -vc null -vo null -bandwidth 10000000 -cache
128 -af volume=0,resample=44100:0:1,channels=2 -ao
pcm:nowaveheader:file=#PIPE# $FILE$ | [lame] --silent -r -q $QUALITY$
$BITRATE$ - -
