I have just spent about 6 hours finding, then troubleshooting this error. I've Kubuntu 8.04, Slimserver 7.2.1 stable main, AlienBBC 2.2b1. I have become familiar with chown and chmod, making sure squeezecenter owns (it had been owned by root) and could execute mplayer.sh and other Alien directory files etc. I also changed the radio station network timeout setting in squeezecenter to 30, rather than 5. One thing that puzzled me was whether it was necessary to download tarball for mplayer and confiugre/make/make install that programme or whether install from synaptic using the medibuntu repository was enough. I've changed so much, I'm no longer sure, but I think I settled on the medibuntu download and that works perfectly. There is no need for ws32codecs. I installed lame too, but not entirely sure that was necessary. Turns out, the main problem appears to have been my router. D-Link DIR-655. It has firewall that appears to reject RTSP streams. You have to turn off application level gateway (ALG) for RTSP in the firewall settings. However, this was not enough for me. I also had to enable multicast. After all of this, I now have alienbbc running on my linux box again.
