On Windows I've gotten this message when the default browser's
connection is improperly configured to use a proxy instead of direct
connection(no proxy).

Java on windows looks at the default browser's config to determine
whether to use a proxy to connect to the internet.

It looks like some thing similar is happening (can't connect to SOCKS
proxy in your log)

If setting your browser connection option doesn't fix it, you may have
to set it directly through the java control panel or the unix
equivalent.

I came upon this thread searching for softsqueeze unknown protocol
socket.
