What is the name of the tar file you downloaded?

What version of squeezeslave are you running?

Are you using alsa or oss audio?

That error usual indicates that the user you're running squeezeslave as
doesn't have access to the audio device.

If you're not running ss as root try adding the audio group to the
user.

Run this command as root;

usermod -G audio username

Log out and back in for the group changes to take affect.
