The oval buttons are for devices on which you use IRBlaster. The volume slider doesn't work with IRBlaster. If you do NOT use IRBlaster, then you probably did so in the past or have for some other reason leftover configuration options in the settings. Go to "Settings->Player Settings-><SB3>->IRBlaster in the Squeezebox Server web interface and make sure there are no buttons for volume-up and volume-down defined.
