I've done a lot of testing with this recently and I can assure you that
iPeng does _not_ run in the background
One thing that does drain the battery dramatically under iOS4 is
turning push notifications on (the default). If you do that, WiFi is
never shutting down even if you quit all apps.

This usually means that WiFi is not yet connected. iOS4, especially 4.2
is a mess in this regard. There is little I can do about it. If you
leave it running you'll notice that _eventually_ the players will show
up.
