Adding the % encode to the commands certainly got rid of the log error. As 7.6.1 r33068 is as quick as a rat up a drainpipe performing a clear & rescan I'm not inclined to tinker with locking and unlocking databases. I had not completed a clear & rescan when I asked the question, but had run one in r33044 which took several hours longer than r32935. Thank you for the help.
