Full marks for determination & perseverance. A few years ago I built
mplayer from scratch and it was a similar marathon task with the need
to get specific versions of libraries.

I've tried to get AAC streaming but it didn't work. IIRC Flac over
http stream will need a mod to LMS conf file but I suspect just like
AAC there is also some other VLC issue.

Current Laptops have no analog audio control and so you have to use the
"plug in socket" trick. In theory, with pulseaudio you should be able
to make browser use a virtual audio stream rather than a real one and
avoid this issue. However I think you should wait until you feel the
need for more pain.
