Found the problem.... The systemd logitechmediaserver.service file from the Arch user repository was incorrect. It looked like it was running lms as a particular user but it wasn't. I've let the package maintainer know about the issue. I'm really surprised that this didn't rear it's head until the install of the Spotify plugin.
