Looks like things are much worse than I thought. This seems to be an
issue with iOS 8, not iPeng...
http://blog.airsource.co.uk/2014/10/11/nsurlcache-ios8-broken/

The problem is that iOS 8.0.x caches the loaded artwork. To do this, iOS
ignores the cache settings an App sets on a load request, this has been
an issue for a long time (iPeng doesn't request caching since it caches
the artwok itself).
However, it looks like now in iOS 8 the OS does not only cache, it also
never clears the cache. On iPhone 6 Plus it even UPSCALES the images
before caching them (for no reason) and then caches the upscaled,
uncompressed images.

This is really, really bad. That said.... I believe other than what's
been said in the article it _does_ some cache cleaning whenever the
device runs out of space but still.... not good.

iOS 8.1 beta seem to fix it, let's hope it comes out soon.
