Do you only want to _inform_ LMS of a volume change or do you also want to get informed by LMS for volume changes the player should make? The latter will NOT work through CLI.
CLI delays volume notifications for up to a second and also there are volume changes (replay gain, volume ramps,...) that only get communicated through slimproto, not through CLI. So if you use CLI it means remotely controlling your volume will be much delayed which can be really confusing and you will lose things like the volume ramps on pause or with sleep fade, replay gain changes and the like.
