Ah - you may have hit on something here.  I have a number of different
players.  The one I noticed this on was a Receiver(Duet).  But, I just
tried the same steam on squeezlite on picoreplayer, and that's working
fine.  Switch back to the receiver - stops after 5 secs - back to
picoreplayer - plays fine for 10 mins so far.  So - looks like you may
be onto something with your transcoding idea.  Anything you want me to
log specifically?
